Game of Thrones Filming Locations in Croatia

The buzz around Game of Thrones is returning with the next season just about a month away. We have posted on the filming locations in Ireland, Seville, and Iceland. However, one of the largest filming areas is in Croatia, where the Red Keep and Kings Landing scenes are filmed.

A majority of these scenes are filmed in Dubrovnik, Croatia, a historic seaport on the Adriatic Sea. The old city has been around since the 10th century and was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979.  The area has steadily been gaining traction for tourists as a great travel destination. The old city and the city walls are famous now for serving as the backdrop for one of the most popular TV shows.

Another Croatian city, Split, also serves as a filming location. Split was used as a filming location for Meereen and other various scenes in Daenerys Targaryen’s plotline. Diocletian’s Palace was used for filming Daenerys’s throne room, and the cellars were used for multiple scenes. Elsewhere, the Klis Fortress was used for external shots of Daenerys and her crew entering the city.

Both cities and the surrounding areas have embraced the role in the series and offer tours specifically around the filming locations. Whether your clients are planning to travel to Dubrovnik, Split, or both, there are tours for them.
