Understand the REAL ID Act
If you haven’t heard of the REAL ID Act, this act was passed by Congress in 2005 to enforce stricter requirements on identification for travel and other purposes. According to the U.S. State Department website: “Beginning on January 22, 2018, U.S. domestic air travelers with driver’s licenses and identification cards issued by a state that is not yet compliant with the REAL ID Act and has not received an extension will need to show an alternative form of acceptable identification for domestic air travel.” In this case, the best form of alternative identification would be a passport book or a passport card (where accepted).
