Passport Updates: REAL ID Act Information

Now, more than ever, having a valid passport for travel is the best form of identification to take with you before you go take flight internationally and domestically. According to the U.S. State Department website, officials are “expecting to see 20 million new passport applications this year.” With more folks expected to take flight, it is important that your clients travel documentation is up to date. Additionally, travelers need to be aware of the REAL ID Act requirements that are in full swing and understand how this act impacts the future of U.S. air travel.

Understand the REAL ID Act

If you haven’t heard of the REAL ID Act, this act was passed by Congress in 2005 to enforce stricter requirements on identification for travel and other purposes. According to the U.S. State Department website: “Beginning on January 22, 2018, U.S. domestic air travelers with driver’s licenses and identification cards issued by a state that is not yet compliant with the REAL ID Act and has not received an extension will need to show an alternative form of acceptable identification for domestic air travel.” In this case, the best form of alternative identification would be a passport book or a passport card (where accepted).

The great thing is many states have already taken action to ensure that their state-issued driver’s license and identification cards meet the necessary requirements. To verify your state’s current status, or for more information about REAL ID Act, click here.
